How To Add a User in Ubuntu Linux

Multiple user accounts on one computer can have several benifits like seperate storage space, privacy and limits.

This tutorial will show you how to add a user in Ubuntu Linux.

Step 1

Open the settings menu and select the ‘Users’ tab.
This can be done in several ways.
Like the picture below you can open the launcher (the dots at the bottom left of your screen, or the Windows key on your keyboard),
and type ‘users’.
The first result will be the one you need to select.

Click on the ‘Unlock’ button at the top right of the window.

A pop-up will ask you to enter your password.
After that you can click on the ‘Authenticate’ button.

Now the green ‘Add User…’ button appears.
Click on it.

Here you will need to choose wich type of user you want.
You can select the Standard user or the Administrator (the Administrator has more rights than the Standard user).
Type in the name of the new user.
Then you can choose to set the password yourself or to let the user type it in when they log in for the first time.
When you are done with the setup you can click on the green ‘Add’ button.

The new user will appear nex to the existing users at the top.
On the same window you can also change some settings like language or automatic logins.
